STOP 5 DELIVERS A GREAT DAY OF WORLD-CLASS FOOTVOLLEY
HOLLYWOOD, FL — Sunday at Pro Footvolley Tour Stop 5 offered a little bit of everything on Hollywood Beach — professional women’s competition, mixed doubles and sensational All-Star men’s matches featuring four of the Tour’s premier athletes.
Before any of it could happen, however, there was work to do.
King Tide flooding left portions of the competition area underwater Sunday morning, forcing crews to drain the main court and remove pebbles, shells and debris from the playing surface.
Once the court was ready, the focus shifted entirely to footvolley.
And what followed was a terrific day of competition.
LARISSA PERFECT ON SUNDAY
Larissa Eugenio put together the day’s only undefeated individual performance, finishing 3-0 across women’s and mixed competition.
Eugenio began alongside Melony Poviones, and the pair quickly established themselves as one of the strongest women’s combinations of the day.
They defeated Natis Novis and Bella Lima 25-17 before taking down Maria Aventura and Julia Coloni 25-21.
Later, Eugenio returned to the court for mixed doubles, this time partnering with men’s standout Igor Grossi against Jonathan Silva and Melony Poviones.
Eugenio and Grossi prevailed 25-22, completing a perfect 3-0 afternoon for Eugenio.
Sunday’s women’s field featured an interesting mixture of experience.
Eugenio, Poviones, Coloni and Aventura brought years of footvolley experience to the court, while several of Sunday’s other female athletes are still relatively early in their development in the sport.
Those newer athletes nevertheless performed well under the scrutiny of spectators and inside a professional Tour environment, gaining valuable competitive experience while producing several close matches.
Natis Novis and Bella Lima, for example, battled their way to a 19-17 victory over Hingrid Mendonca and Emily Perone.
THE A-LIST IS UNLEASHED
The men’s competition brought a completely different dynamic to Sunday.
On Saturday, the Pro Footvolley Tour had intentionally created balanced teams through a draw designed to maximize parity.
The elite players were placed on the “A List,” which meant they could not be paired together during Saturday’s professional tournament.
Four of those A-list athletes — Jonathan Silva, Igor Grossi, Dani Mendonca and Joao Sonda — returned Sunday.
This time, there were no such restrictions.
The result was sensational.
Silva and Grossi teamed up against Mendonca and Sonda in a matchup loaded with some of the highest-level talent in the field.
What followed was arguably the match of the day.
Neither team could put the other away.
At 25 points, they kept playing.
Then 26.
Then 27.
Finally, Silva and Grossi prevailed 29-27 in a riveting battle between four of the Tour’s premier players.
The quality of the match demonstrated exactly what made Sunday’s format different. Saturday’s draw was designed to spread the Tour’s top talent across the field and create parity. Sunday gave those same elite athletes an opportunity to join forces.
Later, the combinations changed again.
Joao Sonda and Igor Grossi partnered against Jonathan Silva and Dani Mendonca, producing another showcase of four A-list players.
Sonda and Grossi took the match 25-17.
MIXED DOUBLES ADDS ANOTHER DIMENSION
Sunday also brought the men’s and women’s fields together.
The day began with Hingrid Mendonca and Joao Sonda defeating Emily Perone and Dani Mendonca 21-14.
Later came one of the afternoon’s most competitive mixed matches, with Larissa Eugenio and Igor Grossi facing Jonathan Silva and Melony Poviones.
Eugenio and Grossi earned the 25-22 victory, giving Eugenio her third win of the day.
The mixed format created matchups that would not ordinarily appear during a standard professional tournament and added another dimension to a Sunday built around different combinations of athletes.
AVENTURA AND COLONI FINISH STRONG
After dropping their opening match to Eugenio and Poviones, Maria Aventura and Julia Coloni responded emphatically.
They defeated Hingrid Mendonca and Emily Perone 18-13, followed by a 25-11 victory over Natis Novis and Bella Lima.
Aventura and Coloni then met Mendonca and Perone again to close the day and won 25-17.
The three consecutive victories gave Aventura and Coloni a 3-1 record and provided a strong finish to Sunday’s women’s competition.
A GREAT DAY OF FOOTVOLLEY
Sunday demonstrated the depth and versatility of the Pro Footvolley Tour.
Developing female athletes had an opportunity to compete on the main court alongside more experienced players. Established women produced quality matches of their own. Mixed doubles brought together athletes from both fields.
And when four of the men’s players who had been deliberately separated by Saturday’s A-list draw were finally allowed to team together, they produced some of the best footvolley of the weekend.
From Eugenio’s undefeated 3-0 performance to the spectacular 29-27 men’s All-Star battle, Sunday delivered competitive matches from beginning to end.
After crews began the morning draining water and clearing the court, Stop 5 ended with exactly what the weekend was supposed to be about — a great day of footvolley on Hollywood Beach.
