Jonathan Silva / Dani Mendonca Show Superiority Once Again
If (rather when) footvolley becomes an Olympic Sport – Team USA will field Jonathan Silva and Dani Mendonca. Today, they played like it was the Olympic Final with fantastic footvolley under windy conditions. They started the day off slow. In their first group stage match, Silva/Mendonca came up short to Plentz/Lobato. Plentz showed no signs of fatigue after winning yesterday’s competition. Neither did Lobato. Silva/Mendonca played best when it mattered the most – in the Final.
Jonathan Silva and Dani Mendonca are Champions of Stop 2 of the 2025 Season Presented by Genius Sports.
Davalos/Martinez made their 2025 return. Like Silva/Mendonca, they started slow. An early loss to the Elias brothers showed some unusual rust; but as expected they bounced back. In the semi-finals, one play may have changed the outcome. In an unfortunate attempt at a Shark Attack, Fernando Plentz was unable to fully execute the shot and fell to the sand in pain. Perhaps dehydration from the strenuous competition under a hot sun – that was the moment – the momentum suddenly shifted in the direction of Martinez/Davalos. From that point on, it was just a formality. Davalos/Martinez would face Silva/Mendonca in another epic final. In the first semi-final, Silva/Mendonca made the Elias brothers re-think their early tournament confidence by putting the match out of reach early and coasting to victory. The Championship Match had its moments; but Silva/Mendonca were too consistent and too mentally prepared.
‘We focused on getting Martinez tired. We’re in our early 20’s. He’s in his early 40’s. We had to win’
– Jonathan Silva (after winning the Title)
‘Consistency. Focus. Execution. This is how you win. Block out the noise’
– Dani Mendonca
